Two years ago, on the 17th of June 2014, I was involved in a serious accident when I was heading to work on my bicycle and hit head-on by a car. Ejected into the windscreen I shattered my spine, lost 3 teeth, bit through my lip, had multiple lacerations and was in an induced coma for 2 weeks. During this time, I was operated on and had metal rods fusing my spine from T10 to L2. I went into the coma weighing 89kg and came out at 74kg.
My T12 vertebra was shattered and T11/L1 were fractured. The doctors all agreed that my fitness had saved my life and was the only reason I'd survived. The ligaments surrounding my spinal cord were so tough from my years of training that the bone fragments were unable to tear through it.
Just before the accident I did a deadlift PB of 185kg for 5 reps, now I was learning how to walk again and was forbidden by the neurosurgeon to lift more than 5kg. So what now?....
Training and martial arts is my life and had saved my life; there was no way I was going to give it up now! I needed to adapt and work around my injuries to do whatever I could to heal and get my fitness back. That is when I started developing my Hench Fit System of exercise.

The photos here were taken the day after my accident and 2 years afterwards to show how far I've come; I am now over my pre-accident weight and stronger, fitter and faster than ever! This is without lifting massive weights (the most I deadlift now is 60kg) and utilising my Hench Fit system.
